I would suggest being even a bit more conservative!
John's observation "...as it's listed under Rule 3(g) explicitly" to
define what constitutes a "line" is a neat one. But IMHO, he is stopping
too short.
Why so?
Note that the "exception" of allowing "loops to form handles" at the end
of the sheets or lines is noted in PART THREE - OPTIONS AND EXCEPTIONS
TO PART ONE, Rule 12.
That is, the fact that "loops" are NOT explicitly listed in Rule 3(g)
does NOT make the loop at the end of a line or sheet a "non-line" or
"non-sheet". (You can NOT tie a line to another line's loop, or two
loops to each other.)
Similarly, the "rope handle" for the centerboard is allowed in PART
THREE (Rule 14). The fact that this rope is allowed in Rule 14, and not
in Rule 3(g), does not make it a "non-rope" or a "non-line." It's as
much a "line" as the shockcord on the hiking strap or the daggerboard.
So, (maybe) you should not tie any other lines to the daggerboard
handle. That's what I meant by "I would be a bit more conservative."
BTW, an FAQ piece on this subject has been sitting on the drLaser FAQ
since 1996, with the title "May I tie the vang line end to the
daggerboard handle?".
I've always presumed that the 1 January 1998 Rule Change that allowed
the vang line to be tied to anything but another line was motivated by
this 1996 FAQ item which aggressively reminded the illegality of tieing
the vang line to the daggerboard handle or the daggerboard shockcord.
Even if I'm wrong in asssuming this "causality", I would suggest
following one of the safer methods suggested in the FAQ:
- Drop the loop of the vang over a vertical (stick-shift style)
daggerboard handle.
- Lead the vang line tail through the daggerboard handle hole and
finish with a stopper knot.
Details in the FAQ. BTW, the FAQ id still in the "public domain."
Opinions? Maybe a Class Measurer may state an opinion, too.
