Last summer during the office transition, Vanguard temporarily ran out of the
New Boat Membership form that had been sent out with every new boat since
1969.
Every new Laser has a one year membership in the Laser Class association
written into the price of the boat.
The Laser class has had this support and more from the builders from day one.
Laser builders are all aware of the importance of the Laser Class in the
promotion of the worlds largest and best racing class. Vanguard has always
paid for a free membership with every new boat and it is my job to find and
sign up those new owners.
The class needs your help:
Make certain that your local fleet watches every Laser that is sold in your
area.
Get the names and phone numbers of the new owners and invite them out to your
local fleet activities.
Make sure your dealer and all the new owners know about their free year of
class membership.
I will include their names and addresses on all the mailing lists that are
sent to your area. I will get our welcome kit in that new Laser owner's
hands.
That new owner will receive four copies of the Laser Sailor magazine where
your fleet and all your local regattas are listed.
We at the North American Office are going to invite that new sailor out to
join you. We will hit his mailbox at least six times.
If you want to have a vibrant growing fleet you need those enthusiastic new
boat owners.
If you are buying a new boat of your own, make certain that, when you sell
your old boat, I receive the name and address of the new owner. That guy who
bought your boat is an enthusiastic new owner too.
I know you will invite the new owner out to join your fleet.
I need his address if I am going to be able to help.
And last but of extreme importance.....I learned English grammar in an age
when the word "his" in previous sentence referred to a person of unknown
gender. I certainly hope that a huge number of our new owners are female. I
do not like writing he / she every time I want to indicate the presence of
both genders in the mentioned group.
I will not use the word "their" because it has an entirely different meaning
than the one I intend to express. The boats usually belong to individuals.
"Their" would say that the boat belonged to an unnamed group of people.
Sorry, but if Norm Laskey saw a written note of mine with the above described
misuse of the language he would probably go back and change my permanent
record at the Union City High School. He would pull out the scroll and erase
the entry on the papyrus.
