This is a fantastic idea. It could work with Lasers too.>>
An interesting piece of History. A local club in the mid 90s was going
through a real small boat slump. Their solution was to buy a fleet of new Lasers
(8 I think). Actually they had been used once in the Smythe Finals. Of course
they got these at a considerable discount. They then turned around and sold them
back to club members for 67% of what the club paid. Basically, you bought the
boats at just a little over 50% of new cost. Wow! The hooker in the deal was
that the club could use the boats 2 weekends in the year for the advanced junior
program (of course you could put your own junior in your own boat) and that the
boats had to be made available one weekend for the club championship (of course
you could sail your own boat in the championship) - oh and you could not sell
the boat outside of the club for 5 years.
Obviously this was a great deal for the Laser purchasers, but what did the
club get ot of it? Well now 5 years later, from dead small boat participation,
they have one of the most active junior programs in the State, they have regular
small boat racing Tuesday nights and every other weekend, they host the biggest
Laser regatta in District 12 (over 60 Lasers in 1999). They send junior sailors
to all kinds of events (Leiter, Ida Lewis, all the Sears, Bemis, Smythe). I
think the club got what it wanted too!
By the way, all the macho stuff about athletic young men in the 70s; when
Lasers were first introduced in England they shipped over a fleet of about 20
boats and had a National Championship at the Welsh Harp, just outside London.
Won by a woman! Sorry I forget her name.
