I hate to be the stick in the mud but isn't the strength of our class is it's low
entry price, lack of innovation and high fun/$$ ratio? When people start talking
about carbon uppers, weighted centerboards et cetera ad nauseum I'm reminded of
the Finn class. When was the last time you saw 150 Finns on the line? Someone
pointed out one time that it's not the rock stars at the top of the pyramid that
support the class, it's the punters making up the base that harbor the idea
that, since the equipment's equal, they have a shot at beating Tanscheit. They
know it's an illusion but the rules give them the hope. When I hosted Masters in
OKC, I had entries from people that hadn't sailed the boat in years (and they
were rigged straight out of the '70's) but they came out and supported the folks
that won. If we tell them they have to pony up another $100, $200,$500 to
convince themselves they have a shot we'll lose them to someother class. Just a
thought from one of the fossils.
