Some comments regarding the new bulletin board being set up by Mark
Michaelsen:
In response to Mark's message dated Wed, 15 Dec 1999 08:22:22 EST where
he noted

I received a few private e-mails inquiring whether "this means MM's list
has my seal of approval."
I would like to clarify that there is no such approval, implicit or
explicit, public or private.
The facts are:
- Since 1996, I have been publicly writing about things that do not work
on this List.
- In a series of postings during 1999 with the Subject "Some thoughts on
this Mailing List", I have expressed in detail the administrative and
technical changes that I think should be made in this List so that it
serves the Laserites better. (References below.)
- In my view, the recent "Mark's retraction" letter issue (that still
has not appeared on this list) is NOT an example of the failure of the
List program to run in real time.
My opinion has been clear since 1996: If I thought a new mailing list
would be beneficial to Laser sailors, I would have created one and put
it online back in 1997!
IMHO, in spite of the enemies it made me unnecessarily among the
well-known names in this Class, it is in the benefit of this Class for
us to critically review and gradually improve the existing Mailing List
rather than to divisively create a new list.
In spite of the opposition to this idea by some, Will Sadler (the owner
of the Mailing List) has graciously (privately) agreed in August 1999 to
put in the time to work on making this List better. Even if his heart
may not be in it, even if he publicly blames me for any mistakes that
happen while trying to improve how this list works, I am grateful to him
for his cooperation. I would like to see this List improved, not a new
list created. And this List IS being improved.
Having said that, Mark Michaelsen loves this List. (Search his posting
on the subject.) He may well believe and act on his conviction that a
new bulletin board provides value added for all of us. He does not need
our approval. He does neither have nor need drLaser's.
